Tariff wall in Nova Scotia cites dumping clause impact
Special correspondent John H. Raftery describes how Nova Scotia and other maritime provinces resist U S competition through an imperial tariff and dumping clause. He notes geography, icebound harbors, and reliance on U S trade shape policy, with local manufacturers seeking self sufficiency while tariffs raise costs for wholesalers and consumers. The piece highlights the trade balance with New England, winter port limitations at Sidney, and calls for broader tariff reform and reciprocal relations with the United States.

War on American Consuls Sparks Wine Trade Tensions
Foreign wine producers resent the aggressive reports by American consuls in Europe under State Department orders to document preparation and shipment methods for wines destined for U S consumption. The move, backed by Agriculture and Commerce, aims to enforce the anti adulteration act, drawing bitter reactions from foreign exporters. No formal protests have been received, and the State Department will defend its agents while noting possible changes if personal factors arise.

The Volunteer Organist Idea and Poem Origins
Sam Walter Foss claims he first discovered Victor H. Benke as the inspiration for The Volunteer Organist. He states Benke suggested the Bowery Mission scene, leading Foss to write the poem in New England dialect about a volunteer organist in a country church. Foss cites a Sun report of Benke’s death and argues his poem predates the song and play.
