Fight in Gaines district threatens party unity in West Virginia
Special to The Washington Post Augusta 16 The Republican contest in the Third Congressional district between W S Edwards and Joseph H Gaines for nomination has reached a heated stage. The Republican National Committee and the National Congressional Committee are mediating to settle the dispute. Senator N B Scott proposed two options: postpone the Hinton convention and hold a primary in Kanawha and Fayette counties, or appoint umpires to decide. Edwards indicated willingness to abide by either result, while Gaines had not responded. Two conventions and dual nominations loom if unresolved.
