G W W Hanger, chief statistician, heads the plan to justify new food laws using price data. Senator Smoot welcomes the data as investigators push to the bases of prices and press for deeper inquiry into the costs of food.
A national drive led by the Bureau of Commerce and Labor will chart wholesale and retail prices of all foods over nine months for 1908 to 1911. Senator Reed Smoot endorses using Agriculture and Labor data as a basis for inquiry into high living costs. Four experts under F W Croxton and chief statistician A W W Hanger will tour the country, gathering evidence and analyzing middlemen profits.
Senator Reed Smoot praised the labor bureau work and said the study will map price changes from producer to consumer with Agriculture Department reports. He urged a special investigative body to review the findings to address the high cost of living and distribution costs.
A 10 year old girl was pursued by a peddler who attempted to mistreat her in Chicago on August 11. The girl's mother rode in a locomotive cab to aid the pursuit, and after a mile long chase the suspect was captured and turned over to police. The incident involved John Wood, a four year old peddler, and the mother witnessed the attack and enlisted the engineer's help.
Bert B. Haugan and Charles C Barber, a Fer gus Falls Minnesota man and a photographer from 9 C street northeast, are charged with taking 500 from Japanese investor George Uyemura by false pretenses. The years old girl was hurt when a boulder struck the car and she was thrown, doctors say grafting is needed and the Long family will pay any price.
James S. Bell, president of Washburn-Crosby Co. in Minneapolis, recounts a London dream after James Pettit’s drowning in Lake Michigan. Pettit allegedly confessed a $1,000,000+ shortage at Peavy Grain Co. Bell says the vision forewarned him and a London paper later noted Pettit’s death.

St Louis August 11 Harry N Atwood will begin his flight to the Atlantic Ocean from St Louis Monday morning. He will tour the city to win a Post-Dispatch prize before departing at 12 o clock. He will stop at Springfield Harpers Ferry Wartlesburg Berkeley Springs Cumberland and return with train departures noted.
Providence reports a remarkable sea tale from the four masted schooner Marguerite. Dennis the pig, famed along the coast for gentleness, grappled a seven foot shark after harpooning. In a wild deck duel, the pig seized the shark’s jaw and tore away a chunk, killing the predator and winning the unusual battle.
St Paul Aug 11 Mrs Minnie Maddern Fiske the actress and first vice president of the International Humane Association complained to Humane Officer John A Moaks after reading that Frank Penas the armless hunter had shot many clay pigeons. The officer explained that clay pigeons are made of clay.
In St. Louis a Black Hand bomb exploded in an Italian colony on Dago Hill injuring fourteen and killing a man and a woman. The blast wrecked a two story brick building and shattered windows for blocks. Owner Tony Romano had received two threatening letters from Brooklyn prior to the blast. No arrests. In Columbia a local reply to a third Black Hand letter was printed after a man refused demands for gold.
Four people joy riding in Nashville last night slashed from a bridge as a Louisville and Nashville freight train passed below. A woman occupant was thrown onto a freight car and rode in to Union Station with a broken leg, while others suffered minor injuries.
A severe quake rattled San Bernardino at 340 pm, causing occupants to flee businesses. A prior tremor hit at 10 20 am. Los Angeles also reported a light quake at 340 pm. The issue also notes a Chesapeake Beach carnival from August 1 to 1 2, with special features and entertainment.

A convicted man and his brother escaped from the Iowa penitentiary after shooting guard William Humaker in Cedar Rapids. Humaker was tied to a tree and gagged in a timber belt west of Marion. two boys aided his rescue as a posse closed in. Humaker’s recovery chances are slight.
An automobile carrying several Bluefield police officers crashed on a curve near the city, flipping repeatedly. James Lo Booth died within 30 minutes, Officer Boyle sustained serious internal injuries and may die, Fred Stafford suffered head and arm injuries, Ray Evans had chest and rib injuries, George O Leary and Lee Andersen were cut, Everett Hawley bruised, all from the Bluefield police force.
