Mandamus orders railway payment for Union Station costs
Justice Barnard issued a writ compelling the commissioners to sign a certificate authorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to pay 1 500,000 to the Philadelphia Baltimore and Washington Railroad. The case turned on whether the station and connecting lines were ready for occupancy as required by Congress and the act funding the project. The court decision clears the path to payment, with commissioners planning to proceed, while divisions over grade crossing work and completion linger among citizens and officials.
