Letter dispute over District of Columbia autonomy and misquotation
A columnist, J. Praint Richata of this city, argues that an article in Everybody's misquoted Macfarland regarding the District of Columbia's government. Macfarland replies with a detailed letter stating the full August 1901 quote and defending the district’s autocratic yet efficient governance. The exchange touches on self government, taxation without representation, and the district's businesslike, nonpartisan administration. Also noted: the death of Mannington mayor Christy at age 75, a 20-term mayor and long-time public servant.
