Allied Forces Advance In Amiens Front Front Gains Across 20 Miles

Field Marshal Haig reports morning offensives on the Amiens front by French first army and British fourth army secured objectives. Allied divisions including French Canadian Australian and English units with tanks breached German lines from Ayre River to Morlancourt. Heavy fighting persisted south and north of the Somme with many prisoners and guns captured.

Survivors report a German U-boat sank the Merak off Cape Hatteras after shelling and torpedoing her. Forty three crew escaped in lifeboats and were landed at Norfolk and Elizabeth City. Trio Rob Bank of $10,000 in Indianapolis Hold Up

Three masked highwaymen robbed South Side State Bank at 1119 South Meridian Street during noon. They struck President John Lauck and assistant cashier Roy Willetts, escaping in a car with about $10,000. Police believe four men were involved, one stayed in the getaway vehicle while three entered the bank.

Navy official to take over Norfolk electric plant
