Hawaii Fleet Leaves Sailors’ Hearts Behind in Paradise
A vivid Honolulu dispatch recalls the July departure of sixteen U.S. battleships bound for Auckland, noting Hawaii’s deep welcome, Molokai’s leper settlement view, ex-queen Liliuokalani’s dignified reception, and the sailors’ lei laden parade. It highlights Hawaii’s nonhostile decorations, the absence of Japanese flags amid a peaceful display, and the locals’ fond farewells as the fleet sails away to distant duties.
