Aerial Descent Ends in Crash on Utica Rail Tracks

William Johnson, balloon ascendant in Little Falls, falls from about eight thousand feet during a parachute descent. The second parachute fails after the cord breaks, he slides along wires then crashes through them onto railway tracks a hundred feet below, suffering a fractured spine and likely death.

Zion City Debts Hit 5 Million In City Meeting

Chicago reports Zion City faces nearly five million in indebtedness. Overseer W G Voliva proposes funding the balance with eighteen year bonds at interest. 860 residents vote to accept the plan while two oppose. A mortgage on 4000 acres of undivided land may be used to relieve finances. Twenty five percent of gross earnings would go to a sinking fund to retire debt.

L B Jones a signal man employed near the wreck site of the Cincinnati and New York Limited on the Fauhandie road was arrested by a deputy coroner on a murder witness charge. He refused to be questioned and will likely post bail as inquest proceeds. Wreck blamed on negligence with signal and right of way issues cited. Further arrests anticipated as inquiry continues.

President Grants Stay Of Execution For Two Negroes

President Roosevelt granted until November 1 a stay of execution for Arthur Adam and Robert Sawyer, two black prisoners in Wilmington N C, convicted of murder and mutiny on the high seas. The stay follows Henry Scott’s confession on the scaffold claiming he killed three officers and the cook aboard the schooner H A Berwind, which sailed from Philadelphia July 4 1903. another implicated negro was killed by Scott.

Old Virginia printer T Jefferson Clark dies in Petersburg

Special dispatch from Washington Fort Petersburg Virginia reports the death of T Jefferson Clark the oldest printer in Virginia at his Rolling Brook Street home He was born in 1815 in King and Queen County son of Rev John Clark a Baptist minister Clark worked in newspaper publishing for over sixty eight years including proprietor of the Daily Express and editor at Petersburg Record and Price Current He served on Petersburg Republican and Southside Democrat for a time and was a longtime Sunday school assistant librarian at Washington Street Methodist Church He is survived by three sons.

Bride and Husband Killed by Electric Car in St Joseph

Hiram B. Aleimick and his bride of two weeks died when their runabout was struck by an electric streetcar near a Benton Harbor to St Joseph crossing. The trolley crash occurred as the pair, travelling at about twenty five miles an hour, were trying to move a receding colt. Mrs Helmick died instantly. Mr Helmick survived a few minutes after being wrapped about the wheels. A dozen physicians were summoned but could not save him. The couple were well known in Hinchinan and adjacent rural districts.
