The Oregon congressman A W Lafferty explains a letter inviting Miss Florence Kubel to view the House gallery was misread. He says enemies stirred the matter, denying any insult while detailing his courtesy and a future introduction offer. Father S J Kubel demanded apology. the issue appears resolved.
Special to The Washington Tet from New York reports Samuel Morgenstein aged 35 of 280 Rockaway Avenue fired three shots into his head this evening. A neighbor recalls his happiness over the birth of his son three weeks ago and says he was too happy to die, then was taken in a dying condition to St Mary's Hospital.
In New York visitors Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy were helped from danger as John Silvers, a Spring Lake postal worker, died saving them from a strong sea undercurrent. His body was not recovered while other bathers saved the McCarthys.
Albert G Butler of Maplewood Mo returns after a year away and kills Eugene Walsh during a dispute over his relationship with Nellie Walsh. Butler is taken to a police station by Rev James Broadhead after the shooting. family disputes claim of engagement.
In Baden a traffic accident harmed Baroness de Biberstein, wife of the German Ambassador to Turkey, and her hostess Baroness von Biemberg. The ambassador’s wife sustained injuries, with the latter described as dangerously hurt.
President Taft surprised Washington by motoring to Baltimore yesterday afternoon with his brother in law Secretary Hilles and aide Maj Archibald Butt. Gen Felix Agnus hosted a dinner at Nacirema and Taft returned to Washington by 9:30 PM.
Capt James Watson seeks arrest of George Peters of the Fifth Artillery at Fort Totten on spy charges for Austria. Miss Clara Anita Dyer accuses Peters of seeking explosive and fortification plans, after meeting aboard an ocean liner and becoming engaged. Letters allegedly support her claims. she later confessed. Separate note mentions a Baltimore and Ohio special train departure.
Des Moines Iowa August 6 1926 a court injunction halted a 44 hour street car strike allowing nearly 500 conductors and motormen to resume work. Judge Lawrence De Graff ordered arbitration for Conductor Benjamin Hyatt and signaled a new method for handling labor disputes, with traffic near normal by 6 pm and public crowds cheering the resumed service.
Special to The Washington zoo Chicago Aug 6 Opinions of Chicago judges and lawyers on Judge Lawrence DeGraffs writ ending the Des Moines street car strike are divided. Judge Theodore Brantano US circuit court backs the action, saying it will be sustained. Lawyer Charles E Erbstein notes the writ seems novel and unusual for such a case.
The speaker said the Iowa judge overstepped his rights in issuing the mandate and criticized DeGraff for acting preemptively. He argued that DeGraff’s mandate was unconstitutional and should be reconsidered.

The Anchor Line steamer Columbia hit an iceberg off foggy seas, flooding the forward hold with water and injuring several aboard including Mrs Elizabeth Ogilvie who broke her leg. Decks were strewn with ice and the vessel reached port after pumps and sandbags restrained flooding.
A woman with five children eloped with a boarder from Yonkers New York taking all seven along. A $500 reward is offered for locating the couple. The missing pair are Celia 39 and Carl Dranikowski who vanished with the Wejchowzis. Ages of the children range from 4 months to 12 years. The wife had been missing since Wednesday and the boarder also disappeared the same day. The family had recently received $2,000 from property sale.
Herman Lukowsky, 26, of 89 Monroe Street, was arraigned in New York today after an attempted suicide by stepping in front of a subway train. He blamed his failure in life on a stutter and nervousness that ruined his chances to work. He said his mother nags him and he cannot find employment, hoping for a chance to work. His case will be reviewed by a probation officer.
Moses Hill a 306 West Fortieth Street resident was killed in New York when, during a quarrel with two white men, he was knocked down and kicked. Witnesses say Hill pulled a pistol and tried to shoot, but one man pinned his arm bending the wrist causing Hill to shoot himself in the abdomen. Three children testified as the only witnesses.
An unusual swarm from nearby swamps attacked Uncle Sam ships at night. Despite searchlights and 12 inch guns, pests swarmed shore and ships, injuring crew and disturbing sleep. Women used veils and ointment. the New Jersey class was joked about as officers reported double stingers. The north Atlantic fleet plans a three month European cruise before a final stint at Guantanamo Bay.
The United States Navy will test air versus sea power near Provincetown Mass in a week. Flying machines with pontoons will take off from and land on water while dropping dummy bombs on battleship decks. Night searchlights will track planes and wireless reporting will link ships and shore.
