Washington as City Ceased in 1871 and District Gov
A Washington newspaper excerpt traces the District of Columbia’s evolution from a city with Georgetown and Washington as separate entities to a territorial government in 1871 and then a three‑member commission in 1874 and 1878. It notes that Washington has no legal city status, yet post offices and directories still use Washington addresses. The piece also covers the National Ball and Bat Club’s effort to supply baseball gear to U.S. military camps, led by Clark C. Griffith, with shipments planned to Camp Ordway, Fort Myer, Quantico, Petersburg, Anniston, and Greenville, plus potential aid to France.
