The mother, a Polish woman, left the child with another 8 year old. Sheriff Clute sent a posse of ten with a deputy to search but no trace of the child or the bear was found.
Morgantown West Virginia August 1 at a special session the State Regents for Schools asked for the resignation of Dr Henry M Payne professor of mining engineering amid several charges. Regents chose Prof Thomas Miller to succeed the late John G Eckhart as state superintendent of free schools and approved a $4000 contract for an addition to the main university building.
A tank rupture at Chester West Virginia releases acid into the Ohio River killing thousands of fish. Reports say the Myer surface is littered with dead fish and river sections between Chester and Parkersburg are devoid of fish for about 90 miles. Authorities warned of continued die off and contamination risks.
In a dramatic pursuit after a bank robbery at the First Bank of White Bear, robber Robert Pohl exchanged gunfire with pursuing men, was shot in the head in a lumber yard battle, and killed. Four others were wounded, including Edward Larken and Thomas Keith, as the posse closed in. Police recovered fifteen bullets in Pohl's body and the bandit fled with about $860 before the fatal confrontation.
Mrs Abert Tevan Richardson of Baltimore, researching English origins of seventeenth century American colonists, revealed that Senator Davis traces lineage to Charlemagne via Slavic kings. Heralds College authenticated proofs, now in Floralds College records, with a certificate read aloud by The Post.
