A string of assaults on women and children in New York ends with a brutal attack on Ellen Bulger in her Bronx flat. Police report mob violence, mistaken identity, and multiple arrests as crowds clash near scenes of abuse while investigators work to piece together a grisly case surrounding Sophia Heckler and linked robberies and arson.
A bel on the second floor held a tool marked by a robber’s work. An ice chest contained a pick with prongs matching marks found around doors and cabinets. There was no blood except at the cellar stairs where the body lay, as authorities noted no sign of axe use in the girl’s death. A note mentions Prince Trong Oul denying American intervention for Korea and planning to speak in the U S and Europe to explain affairs.
A section of the Lackawanna tunnel wall collapsed in Jersey City at 2 am, trapping two workers under tons of rock while others fled to safety. Pietro Tulfo’s leg was amputated to release him. Kwiatkowski remained trapped, with engineers racing to rescue him as a surgeon freed Tulfo.
New York August 4 a police athleticist named Leck at the Cygnet Boat Club attempted a remarkable feat swimming through Hell Gate with three people aboard the skiff Lillian test spectators witnessed the perilous crossing from Fat Cove to Boaly Rock as waves rose and Leck disappeared beneath the water several times before reaching the opposite shore. Leck of Delancey Street police station is aged forty one and weighs two hundred ten pounds.
Three prominent young New Yorkers were badly injured when their four horsepower car collided with a Third Avenue surface car on West Fifty sixth Street. Swift Tarbell son of former Equitable Life vice president was most severely hurt with a broken leg a dislocated shoulder facial burns and other injuries. Edward Woodeson and William Cutching sustained broken legs dislocated shoulders and other injuries. Tarbell owner of the car regained consciousness en route to Bellevue Hospital and said he never wants to ride again. The wreck left the automobile smashed and the victims pinned under and around the wreckage until rescuers freed them.
Bridgeport Connecticut August 4 A tire burst during a high speed race along the Westport turnpike near the Southport post office killed Peter Henderer and badly injured William Mallory, the 19 year old chauffeur for Percy S Bryant of Southport, when the car struck a trolley pole.
A dispatch from Lead City says George Glover Eddy’s son may travel East to help settle the Eddy vs Frye case begun March 1. A Boston arrival is cited. counsel Dewitt C Howe calls the report fake. Glover and his daughter Plan to reach Concord tomorrow morning, to meet former Senator Chandler.
After a night of rain and pursuit by two ministers, John H. Donnelly formerly of Washington and editor of Municipal Journal and Engineer wed Miss Anna Theresa Herfuert at St George's Episcopal Memorial House. The elopement was kept secret. the bride’s mother remains unaware.
The 56 year old Prof Arnold Daumann of New Braunfels Texas killed himself in his hotel room in Sweet's Hotel in New York City. He placed a pistol in his mouth and blew the top of his skull off. A letter from Adolph Brein of Comal County questioned his conduct and mortality.
In Jackson Mississippi on August 4 reports say the Democratic primary canvass will determine the senatorial result. Complete unofficial returns show a plurality for Congressman Joan Sharp Williams over Gov. James K. Vardaman, but margins are small and neither side concedes defeat awaiting official review.
Port Arthur Canada reports a plan by Capt C Young of the Ninety sixth Regiment to use a naphtha launch to seize Isle Royale from the United States. Ottawa says no government action has been taken and State Department officials see no dispute over ownership, settled by the Ghent treaty.
Eva Strangways alias Eva Fog arrested in Toronto by order of New York authorities. She is wanted for swindling shopkeepers and passing bad checks. A Jefferson Market warrant named a dressmaker plaintiff, charging her with obtaining gowns waists hats and cashmeres totaling 299 dollars and presenting a forged check. Additional complaints allege exactions from hotelkeepers and other victims.
A 12-year-old boy climbed a trolley trestle near Hoboken and, while being dared by friends, touched five live wires. He was burned and fell about ten feet, dying before help arrived as hundreds watched.
W Emlen Roosevelt, related to the President, won a dispute with Oyster Bay town board over beach access. After a legal clash over riparian rights at a beach adjoining his property, the board granted permission to cut through the beach to access the lagoon. This compromise ends Ford battles and allows boats to anchor safely in Roosevelt lagoon during storms.
Berlin reports the King of Siam has a famed taste for gems, with estimates placing his jewelry purchases at 93 million dollars during his European tour. An agent from a London firm arrived with jewels valued at 65,000 dollars bought in London. Another purchase in Frankfurt amounted to 60,000 dollars.

A Calais area disaster reports the Ton Tama train wreck on a river bridge near Les Ponts De Ce. Forty passengers in a third class coach perished after the locomotive, tender, and cars fell into the river. the engine and most of the crew were lost. Only the conductor and fireman escaped by swimming.
New York August 4 After failing to obtain permission from city hospitals and penal institutions to photograph the soul in transit Henry Price an aged musician of Art Fornon says he has discovered that the soul has a material existence and he plans to photograph its passage with a camera He laments the lack of interest from medical faculties and appeals to authorities of institutions to aid his experiment He argues the theory rests on scientific principle and that the public demand should be met by allowing the test to proceed
A gasoline launch named Greyhound was rammed near Exposition grounds shortly after 1 PM. Four people, three Garret brothers and a four year old, are believed drowned after the barge that struck them continued to Norfolk. Edward and Clifton Garrett were rescued by the Montauk then later? The incident echoes a recent navy disaster.
Harry Rad ford Moore of Pittsburg traveled to his father-in-law Wiliam S. McCormick’s home in Philadelphia and attacked his wife after learning she was away. During the struggle Moore stripped her clothing and severely injured her before the father intervened. Moore then fled to a nearby room and shot himself through the heart.
Amelia Cyriano, accused by husband John and neighbors of witchcraft, lies dying at Adrien Hospital after severe beating and kicking in Walston area. The incident follows a stretch of misfortunes blamed on the woman. State constabulary pursue John Cyriano. Authorities report on Standard Oil profits and anti trust actions are appended to the dispatch.

Martha E Finger, three, daughter of Fred Finger, rode in a wagon when a runaway mustang bolted. The horse dragged the wagon about four hundred feet. Fred Finger leaped on the horse and fell. The pony dodged obstacles, pulled away, then stopped as bystanders freed the child. She was hysterical but not seriously injured.
