Negro Delegates Split from Roanoke Convention Push
Across Virginia on August 4 delegates to the Roanoke State convention faced split decisions. In Newport News two negro delegates withdrew for personal reasons, a third unlikely to attend. Dinwiddie County caucus elected four, endorsing Judge L. L. Lewis for governor and Roosevelt administration leadership. Fredericksburg reported black and white delegates chosen with pro Roosevelt stance, while Danville and Petersburg meetings endorsed Lewis and party leadership, delaying some delegate selections to future dates.
