Civil War Tunnel Found In Macon Missouri Stockade Area
Excavations for a sewer in Macon Missouri uncovered a seven foot wide tunnel running northwest to southeast through a city block and beyond, ending in a large timber roofed room. Likely built during the Civil War to aid prisoners or guerrilla escape, it extended to the town edge and could admit three abreast. The discovery ties to the old Haris prison stockade and Andersonville notoriety in Northern Missouri, with Merrill's Horse guarding the area during raids and executions nearby.
