Civil War Tunnel Found Near Macon Reveals Escape Route
Excavations for a sewer in Macon Missouri uncovered a seven foot tunnel stretching about a mile to the city edge. It runs from the old Haris prison stockade area toward the northwest and southeast, with a rear-room entrance and timbered roof. The tunnel, finished and boarded, likely served as an escape route for Merrill's Horse against guerrilla threats during the war, and could have sheltered supplies.
