Coffin Hideout Leads to Two Arrests in City Robberies
Nathaniel Keeligg and Thomas Spittman, both described as negroes, confessed to three city robberies and possibly more. Police found stolen jewelry, silverware, and clothing in a stable near Vermont avenue and M street NW, the pair's claimed base of operations. They allegedly targeted Martha Tolliver, Effie Jackson, and Alton Hays in late June, with three additional robberies in the eighth precinct suspected. The coffin, once stored by a former undertaker tenant, was cited as a bad omen for the suspects.
