Tobacco Crop Short Durham Receives First Lot In North and South Carolina
North and South Carolina planters begin cutting tobacco as adverse weather and low prices curb demand. Two carloads of cured tobacco arrive at markets in Durham and Lynchburg, signaling a wary start to the season amid labor scarcity and shifting acreage toward peanuts and cotton. Market reports from Lynchburg, Petersburg, Danville, and Baltimore note light receipts, mold damage, and weak prices, with buyers monitoring quality and preparation for the upcoming sales season.

It demands remeasurement of all routes in the state and full pay increases under the new measurement. The group objects to the graduate salary scale that deprives about 90 percent of carriers of a full $120 raise and urges a straight $900 salary rise.
