Bankrupted officer’s fraud swindled New Yorkers with fake railroad stock
The Philadelphia police held Capt William Plumb Williams after cashing hotel bills, as New York creditors claim losses totaling about $8,000 from schemes tied to the Central Long Island Electric Light and Railroad Company. He used the Lincoln Trust Company name as trustee on bonds valued up to 300,000 amid a bogus Port Jefferson to Patchogue railroad plan. Victims include Mrs M A Mackey of the Bronx and others across New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, with bonds sold on misleading circulars. The Knickerbocker Trust Company and Lincoln Trust Company faced fallout as officials say Williams’s projects were never real while his wife was implicated in the fraud. Funeral notices appear for several unrelated individuals.
