Vitality of the Project in Dickensian Washington Observed
A Washington letter in the New York Sun surveys Dickens and his American Notes, arguing his future-optimism clashes with reality of Washington as a city of grand plans. The writer contrasts British and American parliamentary life, notes debates, furniture, and the Capitol's art, and admires Trumbull portraits while reflecting on ambition and national character.
