Low Bid or Lights Dispute Over Naphtha Mantles in DC
District commissioners consider lower bids or extending current naphtha and mantle gas lighting. Only bidder, American Street Lighting Company of Baltimore, raises prices. Congress funding shortfall and rival companies' lack of competition threaten dismantling incandescent mantles by July 1905. If no lower bid, Welsbach lighting may end for a year.
