Residents near Twenty-ninth and I streets NW fled as Robert H Melson a 19 year old Black man fired five shots in the afternoon. He wrested a revolver from officers, was restrained, and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. A bystander Rosa Dunmire died from a fall earlier in the day, and Arthur Lewis a Vienna farmer hanged himself in a City precinct cell after being refused release. Police and coroner investigations followed.
