Lake Denies Charges in Naval Inquiry Over Emissaries
Simon Lake of Lake Torpedo Boat Company defended himself before the Special House Committee investigating Lilley and the Electric Boat Company. He said emissaries claimed to represent Electric Boat urged buying Lake patents and warned that the Navy bill could bar Lake from competition. Lake refused to sell, noted a $1,000,000 cash offer and $2,000,000 in stock, and said the probe had ulterior motives. Thurston, former senator, testified Lake bore no responsibility for the inquiry. Congressional grants funded dam work including a planned large independent newsprint mill. The company argues riparian rights govern water power and the US can neither own nor grant it to others.
