Land fraud trial reveals forged agreements and blank signatures
Stenographer Marion Doyle testified in the Hyde Benson Dimond Scheider land fraud case about a written division agreement bearing their signatures. The document, badly scorched from the San Francisco quake, showed proceeds split from lands, with signatures to blank forms later filled by office staff. Witnesses described letters to clerks and blank signatures used to secure land deals. An appeal hearing for John A. Benson was sought to be advanced, opposed by the U S attorney, as records moved toward Washington.

Investment in Lace Sparks White House Talks
Darvin J Messerale of New York accompanied by Representative Law led at the White Hall yesterday to start talks with the President on measures to aid the many unemployed in the United States. The envoy from the Ethical-Social league did not meet the President as a Cabinet meeting was in progress but plans a later discussion. The U S used over six million dollars worth of lace goods last year, about 90 percent imported. A special commission of the Bureau of Manufactures seeks to boost home production and has secured reports from United States consuls abroad. The reports flag wages as the main obstacle, with American workers earning three to four times more than in other nations, undermining exports of cotton manufactures to Europe and elsewhere. Major sources of cotton goods cited include St Gall, Calais, Nottingham, Plauen, Belgium, and British India, with U S weekly wage ranges cited from 18 to 30 dollars versus 38 cents to 12 dollars abroad.
