Virginia Taft Plea Is Rejected By White Man's Delegation
The Virginia Republican State convention at Lynchburg indorsed Taft and elected Slemp Proffett Allen and Martin as delegates at large to Chicago, with instructions to vote for Taft. The gathering was described as a white man’s party with few Negro delegates, who were denied recognition or committee seats. Evans Proposes Wider Armor on Battleships Upper Belt
Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans urges widening the armor belt of the fleet by raising the upper edge from six inches to one foot. He argues the extra width should be placed on the belt’s top, offset by removing deck weights, such as cranes, to maintain balance. An earlier Metcalf extract and Swann report support not raising the belt’s lower limit, noting seas and hull stress can expose the lower portion.
