Taft held talks with Liberal and Conservative leaders plus bankers in Havana. A census will occur before municipal elections and a general presidential election, delaying the vote by months as plans aim to restore the Cuban republic and avoid establishing an American protectorate.
Pierpont Morgan arrives in Rome for a brief visit but cannot meet King Victor Emmanuel in Greece. He plans to inform the king he had no involvement in the Genoa Van Dyck theft or Trajan Forum marbles later sold to New York’s Metropolitan. Morgan will meet with Minister Rava instead. Countess d Andigne’s rare furnishings will be auctioned at Sloan's Galleries starting tomorrow morning.
Special to The Washington Post Indianapolis April 8 five women died in Indiana today from accidents. Del Licke of Bluffton burned while washing a shirtwaist with gasoline. Mrs Harry Bririty of Lafayette burned to death when clothing ignited from a stove. Mrs Henry Martz of Michigan City severely burned as kerosene exploded, her aunt Mrs Mary Russell 81 blind neighbor died. near Cambridge City an electrical storm struck an outbuilding killing Mrs Monroe Sherry and her daughter Mrs Lulu Scott as witnesses saw lightning strike the roof split its impact.

His demission letter to the Brooklyn Presbytery requests immediate decision and notes civil court decrees do not bind ecclesiastical courts.
Special to The Washington Post Hyyes, 8 Dak, April Rev John McVey a missionary among Bad River settlers fought off two cowboys George Carney and Fred Temple who tried to force him to drink whisky. McVey, a former college athlete, knocked them out with bare fists, took a revolver, and then rode with them to the ranch for the meeting. Temple later recounted McVey had knocked out Carney and himself.
Jefferson Seligman banker and barge owner told The Washington Post in New York he will never buy or ride docked horses again. He has sold all docked horses, vows to urge friends to cease docking, and supports full tail length horses.
Special to The Washington Post New York April Henry T Holdskom was sentenced to eleven months and twenty nine days imprisonment for bigamy by Judge Fawcett in the County Court Brooklyn. He pleaded guilty last week. His second wife Ida Wheaton who married him last December was present and urged mercy while Judge Fawcett condemned the act. Holdskom’s first wife Alice McAnnitch was married to him in Philadelphia in 1893.
William T Stead told the New York Methodist conference that American Methodists must act beyond prayer to secure an international peace law at the Hague. He questioned the church’s global influence, urged unity with England and Rome, and a committee was appointed to draft actionable resolutions under Bishop Berry.
Timanus and City Comptroller Heffner were renominated tonight by the Baltimore Republican convention. Dr A F Grempler withdrew from the second branch presidency, Samuel H Tattersall agreed to accept after initial reluctance, and Wachter backers demanded a complimentary vote before Timanus’s nomination by acclamation. The meeting appeared harmonious with underlying opposition.
Two children playing near 302 East 87th Street overheard noises from Mrs Flora De Tour’s second floor flat and witnessed two men ripping up carpets and bagging silverware before fleeing. They alerted Patrolman Brien who arrested the burglars.

Reported from Mobile and New Orleans. Nicaraguan forces seized Puerto Cortes and Ceiba in Honduras without resistance after warnings from Commander Fullam. Ceiba fell April 2. Cortes captured with control passing to Estrada and Letta. Consul Echazarreta confirms Cortes fall. Ceiba status unclear.
Nicaraguan officials plan to seek an end to hostilities by proposing terms to their government. Cable reports say Nicaraguan troops moved toward Puerto Cortez, Honduras, amid questions over a possible capture. U S officials discussed the crisis with Nicaraguan leaders and American interests in Honduras pressed for a peaceful resolution.
Gen Juan Ostrada was believed to command the Nicaraguan forces at Puerto Cortez with no restrictions on trade or commerce.
Francisco Ozorio Rojas, exile and former Guatemala City paper editor, printed President Cabrera’s message on the last page after being warned. He was arrested, whipped with a bull whip, jailed a month, then released with orders to leave the country. His only possession now is the bull whip.
In Jefferson City deposition Rosa Lee Hammond wife of divorce defendant Thomas Lewis Hammond testifies that traveling salesman Swarts courted her, posing as a model at a dressmakers convention in St Louis and wearing a corset to display costumes crafted by Lillie Marie Firhardt, with letters and meetings noted in St Louis and Jefferson City.
Philadelphia area story reports Pennsylvania Railroad bans conductors and brakemen from helping women board or depart trains unless asked. The order aims to protect young women's white shirts and dresses from being soiled by overzealous staff amid prior complaints. Issued in Wilmington Delaware on April 8 by the railroad company.
Four-masted barge No 1 towed from Key West to Mayport was found off Cape Canaveral with nine missing crew members feared dead. The Nordkyn rescued two dogs and two cats aboard and reported all crew not aboard when picked up. Navy dispatches traced potential sightings and coordinated Atlantic Fleet search operations before learning the barge had been taken in tow into Mayport.
The will of Lulu B. Grover of 2089 Lexington Avenue names Theodore Roosevelt as the sole beneficiary with bequests including household items and her cat Snowdrop Low. No petition was filed with the will. Roosevelt is expected to accept and donate the estate to a New York charity. The cat is being cared for under court directions.
Former Queens County district attorney John B Merril was attacked on a street by a razor-wielding assailant. He sustained a slight chin cut and a neck wound, defending himself as officers chase a suspect described as about five feet four, clean shaven, in a light overcoat and dark trousers near Broadway and Union Place. Police from Richmond Hill seek the would-be killer with two detectives assisting.

New York reports that Charles Stephens, former secretary to Capt Young, military attache at the U S legation in Port au Prince, Haiti, is jailed on charges of stealing a packet of papers tied to Haiti Chile negotiations. He sailed aboard the Prins der Nederlander. papers were recovered and largely restored to the legation archives at Port au Prince.
