Probe Pullman Tips Porters Paid 27 50 a Month
The United States Commission on Industrial Relations opened its inquiry into wages and conditions for sleeping car porters and conductors in Chicago. Pullman general manager S Hungerford testified that after fifteen years service pay rises to 28.87 monthly and uniforms cost 26.59 annually for the first ten years. Frank P Walsh pressed about tips and living wages, Hungerford denying origin of tipping and saying wages were not deemed insufficient though he noted no widespread dissatisfaction. He added porters are not required to polish shoes. R W Bell of the Federation of Pullman Conductors and Porters was to testify next.
