Forest Fire Rips Veale Township Farms Endangers Homes
A Sunday afternoon forest blaze in Veale township near Davieas county raged through 200 acres of timber along the farm of John M. Peek and nearby properties. Firefighters from about 200 residents battled flames for hours aided by limited water, saving barns and several homes but destroying fences orchards and exposed timber. Authorities say Indiana forest fires this year have caused over 1.6 million in timber losses, with Coon hunters and railroads cited as major causes and road supervisions urged to enforce fire wardens.
