Passenger train collision near Hazelton injures no one

Between Patoka and Hazelton Friday a Southern railway passenger train rear ended a freight train, demolishing two freight cars and shaking passengers. Eldon Deffendol, a barber from Kidwell and Gray's, was on the passenger train and shaken but not injured. Freight on a siding failure caused the crash, delaying all Southern trains until early morning arrival in Vincennes.

Three Saloon Men Arrested Today in Montgomery

Sheriff Milton Pitzgerald reports three Montgomery saloon keepers arrested today. Abread Brewer faced Sunday opening, Walter Brothers accused of selling liquor to an intoxicated man and obstructing via, and Cha Connaughton charged with selling liquor on Sunday. They posted bonds for June circuit court appearances.

Ladies Auxiliary AOH Dance Honors Winners at Masonic Hall

In society notes the Ladies Auxiliary of the AOH hosted a card party and dance at the Masonic hall on Friday evening. Mrs A G Stumpp won the ladies prize a picture while Grover Duffy won the gentlemen’s prize a box of meats. After cards, couples danced to music by John Dodé on piano.

Forty Hours Devotion at Sts Church Sunday Start

Oil Tank Derails Near Shoals After Sudden Brake

An extra freight train near Willow Valley six miles east of Shoals derailed a box car containing oil when emergency brakes were applied suddenly. Engineer Frank Biatidid and fireman Wn Eberbart led the crew from the city to right the gil tank car, delaying passenger service by about two hours.

John Lett passes away at home near city

John F Lett, a farmer about fifty, died at 3:00 this morning at his home five miles south of the city after several weeks of rheumatic illness. Funeral will be at 2:30 Sunday at Mt Olive church Veale township, burial in Mt Olive cemetery. He leaves a widow and several children.

Nail Through Foot Injures Laborer at Work Site

John Hand, a well known laborer, was confined at home with no injured foot. While at work in the east end repairing crossings he kicked a nail from a board. The nail penetrated the flesh about one inch, causing a bad wound and keeping him from work for several days.

The remains of Selby Hines, killed near Sedalia, Missouri, will be brought to this city for burial in the near future. Hines’ mother and Gayings’ brother were shocked by the news as reports described the tragedy and arrangements.
