July 1.7 notes discuss carriers salaries rising to about 900 dollars yearly in Malt Lake City Utah and elsewhere. Provisions to raise pay were debated with 90 percent of postal employees affected and some amendments restored after order points.
The county editor reports petitions by Henry Alkman and associates for road work between Elmore and Steele townships. The Fatsharer petition requests 80 percent gravel, number 8 screed, nine inch depth and wide laying. At a Monday night meeting the Ancient Order of Hibernians decided to relocate from Magzonic hall to the new Ke of C hall. Plans include a St Patricks day schedule with a morning mass at St Simons church afternoon degree work for many candidates and an evening smoker.
A two story wooden house three miles northeast of Montgomery burned Friday morning about 9 o clock. The fire was caused by a defective fire. Household goods were destroyed. The home valued at 2000 dollars. Gough carried 600 dollars in insurance on the house and 200 on the contents.
John Morgan sues James Crockett for 100 damages claiming a horse sold in June 1906 was misrepresented. Morgan says the animal’s real value was 75 while he paid 150. The suit arises from a horse deal between the two men.
Oil was struck on the Harmes farm near White River five miles east of Bicknel. The flow is small but expected to become a gusher when shot. Leases by the score have been taken around the well and other wells are in progress. Almost all land in and around Bicknell has been leased.
The will of Edward L. Eaton filed for probate Monday leaves all property including forty four acres of land personal property and a Modern Woodmen Insurance policy to his widow. The will was made August 13 1903 with witnesses James A. Sparks and Elijah H. Tomey.
Citizens of Decker township in Knox county held a mass meeting Saturday and adopted a resolution to request a complete gravel road system, the only township in the county not yet petitioning for gravel roads.
Thomas Nugent county auditor trades his Barr township farm of 164.50 acres for a flouring mill at Jamestown in Boone county. Nugent is now in Jamestown tending his mill.
Congressman Chaney announces that Professor Spillman of the agricultural department will visit Washington to address farmers on topics of interest. The meeting time will be announced later and is set for Monday in early April with Chaney and Chavey in attendance.
Coal mining starts soon as James H. Wilson plans drilling on Gowdy farm owned by Wilson south of South Kington. Four to five holes to locate rich veins in a renowned coal field. Mandolbach Brothers, who found a thick high quality vein on Andrew Lillie's farm southwest of the city, expect to hoist coal within two months, with about 300 men likely employed within two to three years.
The ceremony solemnized Tuesday evening at the home of Charles Wise united Henry A. Wood and Mrs. Florence C. Thomas. Rev. T. R. Ragndale officiated. The couple will reside near the Edwardsport road. Wood is a veteran and active Republican worker.
Firefighters saved the home of E. M. Tressel at 705 West Seventh Street Marion but the kitchen suffered $200 damage. A parrot left inside died in the flames as Tressel and neighbors battled the blaze. The family grieves the loss and seeks to recover.

The body of Phbe Tewell, age forty seven, was found in a muddy ditch near a footbridge in Vincennes. Three boys Archie Dean and Horace Cochran reported the figure to Captain Kru. City witnesses the formation of a new Forty-Two society under the Red Men banner with officers and members listed including L H Stuckey J W Waller George Waller and others. The ceremony occurred Thursday evening as the lodge organized under the leadership of chief Mezler and sagamores Woods Wheeler and Williamb.
C W Deckard sold a 30 acre farm three miles north of town to Squire Johnson of Plainville for 2200. Johnson plans to move onto the farm. He also sold his west Van Trees street residence to Mrs Stella Hoffmann and bought Isaac Keith’s property on Bedford Avenue.
