A new man was placed in charge as Mayor Woarty led a shakeup at the Democratic committee. The vote and timing remain unclear, but the change signals a shift in local party leadership and governance.
The Democratic county central committee met Monday in the city with John W. McCarty as mayor and Jord high executioneer. Forsythe was named temporary chairman and the convention set for March 26 to elect a county chairman and organize the delegate body. Delegates from Washington, Barr, Elmore, Madison, Van Buren, Veale, Harrison, Bogard, Steele and Reeve townships were listed with multiple first and second positions, and warrants for about 360 delegates based on votes for secretary of state in the last election were noted. Alvin Padgett attended but did not speak, while the organization’s makeup prompted wary glances toward him from rivals.
Polls buzz over a contentious township convention where Spencer Padgett and Walsh are blamed for a surprise resolution backing William A. Cullop. Forsythe and Spancer ties loom as Walsh O’Neall and others face backlash amid prearranged political skirmishes. Judge Ogden headlines a rally with a fox hunter poker tale as mood lightens.
About 2,500 men took part in a fox drive but three foxes escaped through a weak south line. Women waiting at the meeting point found no foxes in the enclosure. Leaders plan another drive soon seeking better coverage and results.
A head-on collision between two trains on the Grand Rapids and Indiana line near Bear Creek, five miles north of Kalamazoo, Mi chigan, killed one fireman and injured three other crew members. Misinterpretation of signals is reported as the cause of the afternoon wreck.
Death notices report the passing of William Cate in Washington on Sunday morning after a year of illness, Basil Clements, a Civil War veteran, at his home on North Street from complications, Lizzie MeLin at age twenty nine on New Street from consumption, and EMs Neighbors a longtime local tentmaker with survivors including three children and two sisters. Mr Neighbors born in Ohio in 1838 settled in Shoals before moving to Washington. Cate was born in Texas in 1878 and survived by wife and son. Clements served in Indiana’s 44th Volunteer Infantry and will be buried at St Johns cemetery after funeral at St Simons Catholic church.
Bloomfield February 8 Peter Johansen a Terre Haute born tailor says three local boys Hoy Calvert Roscoe Boltz and a man named Sparks assaulted him in his shop breaking his jaw and injuring him about the head and face Calvert has been arrested and placed under a five hundred dollar bond
An early hour fire destroyed a two story Bloomington home. James Gentry forced the door and carried eight family members from the burning building as they waded through four inches of snow in bare feet. Several were nearly suffocated before rescue, all were unharmed.
Nine delegates from Martin County to the Democratic state convention were instructed to vote first, last and sit the time for Samuel Istane for governor. The directive reflects a unified stance by local party delegates ahead of the state gathering.
Reports two couples marrying in Vincennes and nearby areas. Lee Purcell and Maud Williams wed at the Maysville pumping station area, with relatives witnessing. Ella C. Riester and John W. Biddingert married at St. Simons Catholic church, followed by a luncheon and plans for a trip to St. Louis. A license was issued for Raymond Taylor Williams and Gertrude Mayr Goodyear after a clerk’s office encounter.
Miss Maud Godwin of Washington, daughter of George Godwin, and Bernard I. Spalding of Montgomery were wed last Saturday at St Peters church parsonage. The ceremony was by Rev. Father Matthews with Neil Godwin and Miss Mary Spalding as attendants. Spalding is cashier of the Farmer's Bank of Montgomery, and Maud Godwin served as deputy county treasurer. The couple will reside in Montgomery.
The Southern Indiana Minister's association announces a March 5 all day session in Columbus. T. J. Legg of Indianapolis will read a paper on Southern Indiana as a Mission Field. Grant K. Lewis of Cincinnati will speak on Rural Churches and American Missions. A paper by Rev. W. J. Cocke of Greensburg is also planned.
The John A. Rowe Cut Stone mill burned at Bedford destroying all machinery and $20,000 worth of cut stone. Total loss estimated at $70,000 with $20,000 insured.
Charles Lythgoe, founder of the first glass factories in Loogootee, died at his Indianapolis home. He was a prominent figure to local business circles and among those connected with Loogootee's early glass manufacturing scene.
Daviess County Council held a special session to reject funding for a county sealer of weights and measures and to authorize a temporary $13,000 loan from Washington banks for gravel road repairs. The council also refused several other appropriations while approving funds for courthouse insurance and bridge projects. Five members attended with Hugh F. McKernan presiding.
Democratic County Chairman and E. Forsythe return from Bloomington after a Second District meeting presided by District Chairman Gwinne. Delegates at Monroe discuss fixing the congressional convention in Worthington on March 23. Candidates include Cullop and John A Riddle with possible additions. Padgett supports City Attorney Spencer, whose entry remains uncertain.
Clark Leedham a fireman on the E. and I. has been promoted to a passenger duty and has moved his family to Terre Haute for more convenient living.
Arthur T. Mayfeld of Jesonville, an attorney, is recovering after an assault. The incident prompted medical care and an ongoing investigation.
