President defends canal deal amid libel accusations
The president condemns stories accusing a U S syndicate of Panama Canal fraud as libelous. He cites Indianapolis News and New York World articles, asserts no investigation is needed, and claims congressional approval guided the deal. He details France stockholders, Morgan & Co involvement, and the canal’s transfer to French property owners. He submits correspondence and lists stockholders. A second item reports James Clark, a Southren Indians railroad brake man, killed in a likely accident near Odon with family notified and burial arrangements in Terre Haute.
