In Lincoln California Judge Edward Grey took a firm stance against a traffic violator in his courtroom. He warned that fines would come from his own pocket and ordered suspended his daughter’s license for 60 days.
In New York, Carl Erskine and Alfie Reynolds faced off as the Dodgers and Yankees opened the World Series. The Yankees grabbed a 4-0 edge after two innings, with Bauer triple driving in Collins for a run, and Mantle, Woodling adding runs as Reynolds and Erskine traded early outs and hits.
The Washington county chapter of the American Cancer Society held its annual meeting at the Methodist church after a potluck. Officers elected include Chapter Chairman Mrs. C. R. Reed and Secretary Lucille Rhodes with other posts assigned. Special service awards were presented to several workers. A report stated cancer aid costs average about $1,000 per case.

Prof August Piccard and his son Jacques descended 10 334 feet in the Mediterranean off Isle of Ponza in a banana shaped craft named Trieste. They aimed for two miles but stopped short, submerged over two hours, beating the prior 6 800 foot record off Toulon by French officers.
The VFW announces a dance night featuring the Dick McColl orchestra on October 2 at the VFW hall. Committee members say all are invited and tickets will be sold at the door.
The 1953 U.S. cotton crop is estimated at 14,660,000 bales, about 3.6 percent below 1952. The International Cotton Advisory Committee projects a potentially substantial drop in world cotton production for the year.

Janice Egel 12 of rural Muscatine died after a two car collision near Wilton Junction. Mrs Shirley Knowles 23 of Wilton Junction was seriously injured. Ralph Seibel 35 of Durant drove the other vehicle. Egel died two hours after the crash at Hershey Hospital from severe head injuries.
J Laurence Henss resigns as Secretary of the Wayland Board of Education effective October 1 after nearly 12 years in that role. President George E Boller also resigns to take the vacated seat. Dr C C Wyse is appointed to fill Bollers unexpired term.
Fair tonight with cooler readings in the east and again in the far west. Lows 38 to 43 east and 40 to 46 west. Thursday looks mostly fair with highs ranging from 68 to 86, northeast reaching 76 to 83.
