Governor Thomas E. Dewey prepares a nationally broadcast address from Salt Lake City on NBC promising a unified stand against totalitarian aggression. He stresses peace with honor and warns dictators not to misread American unity in this election year.
Jennie R. Keating 71 lifelong Washington County resident died at home 816 East Van Buren Street after a long illness. Funeral set for Saturday at 1 30 p m in Jones funeral home with Rev Paul Wells officiating. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was born December 7 1876 on a farm northeast of Washington to John and Isabelle Kennedy Keating. Survived by brother John Keating of Washington. preceded by three brothers and three sisters. She was a Baptist church member.
Graveside services were conducted for Clifford Thomas Steele two month old son of Clifford and Dorothy Steele at Elm Grove cemetery. Father H. J. Corcoran officiated. burial followed. Surviving are his parents, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. C Shockey and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Steele of Washington. Jones Funeral Home handled arrangements.
ST LOUIS UP1 A group of professional party givers decided that place cards at dinner parties are taboo. Members of the International Stewards and Caterers Association met here and agreed it is the hostess duty to point out seats to the guests.
Western powers pressed the United Nations to indict Russia over blocking international control of atomic weapons. The United States and Canada backed a plan for global oversight, noting U S stockpiles and urging assembly approval while debate on the Berlin crisis continued. France’s Communist Party warned against war and pledged to oppose imperialist plans. Canada urged member states to limit sovereignty to enable the plan. Warren Austin said the atomic energy commission stalemate could be broken by broad public scrutiny and a strong vote.
A large number of small yellow Maryland yellow throat warblers were found dead in multiple town areas overnight. Ban Waters of the city street department said several birds lay in gutters around the square while residents in the south part reported many more in yards and streets. No cause is known for the widespread fatalities.
Fort Worth Texas residents visiting the home of George Stevens use personalized drinking glasses enamelled with their names as a hobby of Mrs Stevens. Guests keep the glasses for personal use.
Washington FFA plans a purebred swine sale at the armory Saturday evening February 2 at 7 30 o clock. Four breeds will be offered by FFA members. Members also bought a top Shropshire ram as a cooperative project and attended a CROP meeting at Mt Pleasant.
Country club members are reminded of a bridge tournament tonight sponsored by the Women’s golf and bridge association. Mr and Mrs Ted Bailes are in charge. The event starts after the family night dinner with attendees not at dinner asked to arrive at the later start time.
Graveside services for Everette Eugene Young, ship's cook third class, will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM at Woodlawn cemetery with Rev. F W Eastwood in charge. Young, born June 10 1926 and killed October 24 1944 when the mine sweeper he served on was bombed near Leyte, was the son of Mr and Mrs Elmer R Young of route four. Members of the VFW in charge of military rites will meet at the VFW hall at 1:30 PM Sunday.
Des Moines Iowa September 30 At least one man from every county will be drafted to meet Iowa's first selective service induction quota of about 175 in November Col Ralph A Landser said counties may supply two or three draftees to run the machinery He noted county 1A pools will vary by county with Benton county reporting 90 percent 1A among single men 20 to 25 and Lancaster called that unusually high No date is set for ending exemptions by marriage and a deadline likely not before 1949 if married before report time a man will be classified 1A until notified otherwise
Graveside services for Harriett Eliza Meacham native of Clay township will be held Saturday at two o'clock in Clay cemetery. Born in 1860 Harriett Townsend married Dudley Meacham sixty five years ago. They lived in Chicago after marriage then returned to Clay community later to care for her father. The Meachams had three children Bessie Frank and Iloy.
Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt widow of Theodore Roosevelt died at Sagamore Hill Oyster Bay Long Island after a fall left her bed bound for months aged 87 The former first lady wed TR in London on December 2 1886 following the death of his first wife Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt in 1884 Relatives said the cause was complications from a hip fracture with her death reported around 7 a.m. local time
To ensure a pleasant trans Atlantic crossing for child passengers the ship’s mother on the Rodgers Roberts line must qualify as a trained nurse, a child specialist and a psychiatrist.
Funeral arrangements are being coordinated through Sherman Funeral Home as the family plans services and tributes.
In Berlin German civilian was wounded when a Russian soldier fired into a small crowd inside the American sector near Tempelhof. Three Soviet soldiers crossed the boundary and fled back into the Russian zone after the incident. An American military police patrol arrived as shots rang out. Lt. Col. Thomas Lancer took charge of the investigation.
A surplus store will open Friday in Washington across from the State Theatre in the former Dutro Tire Shop. It is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Benee who relocate from Burlington where they run a confectionery. Their move centers on finding housing as their three children Marveline 18 Robert 17 and Sharon 14 remain in Burlington temporarily.
John Fitch first powered a boat by steam on a pond near Davisville Pennsylvania in 1785 and later on the Delaware River. A historic note recalls Fitch’s pioneering experiments in steam propulsion and early American navigation achievements.
John Lane buyer of curtains draperies and lamps will speak at a YWCA sponsored meeting in the community room of the Y on Tuesday October 5 at two o clock. Lane will demonstrate changing draperies use of new materials and chalk talk on home color schemes for homemakers in Washington and community.
The Journal corrects an error in yesterdays report credit for the Ys Mens club program. Ralph Zeck presented the color films Tuesday night, not Elmer Wong, and the apology notes no malice, only a mistaken attribution among staff.
Congressman Thomas Martin addressed the Republican women’s clubs in Columbus Junction after a noon lunch. Officers elected included Marie Wilson president Roxie Nichols vice president Phil Weldin Washington recording secretary and other officers for Davenport New London Fr Madison Bonaparte and Iowa City among the slate.
Boy Scouts of Washington will sponsor a waste paper drive on Saturday October 2. Trucks will serve all four troops as they collect from porches and streets. Proceeds aid football trips to Iowa City and camping expenses for the troop activities.
A large group of V F W members and their guests met in the V F W hall for a chili supper and meeting. District and department officials including Bob Johnson of Fairfield Comrade Dawson and Charles Smith spoke on Y F W work and aims. Commander Don Bealer and Everette Burham outlined plans for the new Y F W hall.
A group of college students and two faculty sponsors depart for Iowa Falls to join a meeting of the Iowa Student Councils of junior colleges. Attendees include Francis Sclneider, Junior Bauer, Donna Reim, Richard Dare, Jerry Denison, Beverly Crandall, with sponsors Raymond JD Stephens and Edna Mercer.
The Forensic Club held its first meeting of the year and outlined plans for the coming term. Officers named were Patricia Brower president Ron ald Baker vice president Betty Tait secretary Frances Miller treasurer Patricia Brown program chairman and Mrs Evelyn Galbraith faculty sponsor. The club will present a one act play at the Homecoming assembly with Jim Dawson Ann Houck Jean McKinney and Jane Whitehead on the play selection committee. A rewrite committee of Ted Stewart Marolyn Penn and Ruth Wagenknecht was appointed to revise the constitution and by laws.
