In Marietta Ohio Barry Goldwater on a whistle stop train blasted President Johnson as the chief enemy of Social Security. Introduced by Robert Taft Jr he praised the late Sen Taft as a friend and ally. Rain fell as 5000 to 7000 listened amid a dynamic tour promising swift action on riots and law enforcement and planning 33 campaign stops ending in Chicago.

Bullet shatters windshield on car near Ainsworth

An unknown shooter fired a bullet that shattered a windshield of a car traveling east on Highway 92 through Ainsworth shortly before noon yesterday. The bullet did not penetrate and appeared to glance off the curved surface. The driver reported seeing a person on nearby railroad tracks. deputies found no one and are investigating.

Farm census time is drawing near in Washington County

The five year Census of Agriculture will be conducted nationwide in November with county crew leader and township enumerator positions open. Applications for the county crew leader role, responsible for recruiting training and supervising enumerators, are due to the Regional Director Bureau of Census in St. Paul Minnesota. Applicants must be 18 or older resident of the county have a car and pass a written test. Rural mail carriers will deliver census forms in early November and enumerators will visit farms to collect and verify data starting about a week later.

Goldwater Campaign Stops Planned in Iowa and Wisconsin

UPI reports Senator Barry Goldwater will campaign in Des Moines on October 13 as he travels from Topeka to Milwaukee. He will also visit Sioux City on October 16 en route to the National Corn Picking Contest in Sioux Falls. Robert D. Ray notes the schedule and adds former Vice President Richard Nixon will speak at a Schwengel luncheon in Davenport and at a breakfast in Waterloo.

Preparatory World Wide Communion Service Planned

A preparatory service for World Wide Communion will be held at Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church Wednesday evening September 30. Rev Hubert Sunderman of Columbus Junction will speak and Dr Vernon G Flgin of Marion Avenue Church will preside. The Lord’s Supper will be observed during the morning worship on Sunday October 4.

Bond Proposal to Fund New Jail in Washington County

Washington County voters will decide in November on a $110000 bond to build a new jail and sheriff s office after a grand jury urged replacement and urged immediate repair of the crumbling west wall. The three member board calls it necessary with a half mill tax levy. Chairman Howard Anderson cited obsolete heating, no individual cells, and high repair costs, noting a new heating plant could pay for itself. If the bond fails, costs to repair or replace rise sharply.

Historic landmark group meets Oct 10 in West Branch

The Iowa Society for the Preservation of Historic Landmarks holds its Fall Meeting Saturday October 10 in the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library auditorium West Branch. Registration at 10:00 am. At 11:30 Cedar County Historical Society discusses John Brown Trail in Iowa. Box lunch $1.75, reserve by Oct 8 from William J. Wagner Des Moines. Four charged with larceny of motor vehicle

Charges of larceny of a motor vehicle were filed yesterday against four young men involved in auto thefts in late August. The four are Robert J. Northrup, Michael H. Corso, John L. Kempf and Freeman Slabach. Each waived preliminary hearing and were bound over to district court. Slabach's bond was set at $2000, the others at $1000.

Start hearings on Iowa ballot suit in Polk County court

A UPI report states a hearing opened in Polk County District Court on a suit to remove the names of President Johnson and Hubert Humphrey from the Iowa ballot. Early testimony covered background information with Secretary of State Melvin Synhorst as the fifth witness. Synhorst said Iowa election laws are very sketchy and that he could not perform his duties if forced to follow a deadline Democrats missed.

Iowa Weather Outlook Fair with Mild Temperature Shift

A forecast for Iowa calls for fair conditions tonight and Wednesday with little temperature change. Lows range from 35 to 40 in the north and 40 to 45 in the south, while Wednesday highs rise to the 70s. Thursday looks generally fair and a bit warmer.
