Philadelphia Sept 20 John Mitchell president of the United Mine Workers replies to Baer Reading Railroad president. He argues wages in bituminous fields are higher than in anthracite and disputes Baer's hours and wage claims. Mitchell cites official figures to show output rose and defends miners against claims of lawlessness while condemning guards.
A Boston committee led by a newspaper publisher sought court relief from coal shortages and high prices. They filed a bill of equity in the supreme court asking for a receiver for the coal companies and coal carrying railroads to stabilize supply and costs.

Seattle report details Mayor Thomas B. Humes being found by a search party after wandering injured and starved since Thursday. He sprained an ankle, slept in a hollow log, and survived on huckleberries before rescue Saturday. He is back home and expected to recover.

Marion Indiana reports Frank Stecher, ex-Chicago attorney now in Van Buren, was attacked by about 400 oil workers and citizens who saved his life from a lynching. He was struck in the back with a stone, and authorities say his spine may be injured. The mob formed after Stecher reportedly refused to pay a note for John Blair, a feeble-minded boy, and a settlement was demanded.
Corinth Miss Sept 20 A negro identified as Tom Clark alias William Gibson was burned at the stake by a mob after confessing to the murder and assault of Mrs Carey Whitfield on Aug 19. The crowd gathered as relatives of the victim aided in the execution, and Clark confessed to additional killings on an excursion train in Mississippi. The mob dispersed once the body burned, leaving the town in its usual course.
Crowds thronged the town as a plan to burn a prisoner named Clark at 3:30 pm was announced. At 2:00 pm faggots were arranged around an iron rod and by 8:00 pm he was led to a cemetery gate, heavily manacled, while the crowd awaited the sentence. Clark stated he deserved the punishment and requested a letter be delivered.
In Pittsburg on Sept 20 the window glass workers association L. A. 300 of the Knights of Labor won a 12 percent wage raise after a two hour conference with manufacturers. The raise reestablishes the previous scale, seen as a major settlement, following disputes with rival groups and earlier actions by competing firms. Also reported are league and American baseball scores from Saturday and Sunday games across major cities, including Pittsburg, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Washington, plus notes on railroad and highway developments in Chicago and Milwaukee.
Officials from New York and Chicago road groups arrived by steam car to assess the feasibility of building a Macadam highway linking the two cities. Chicago, Sept. 20 Inspector Nicholas Hunt is named in damage suits totaling 125000 filed in circuit court by Oscar Thompson and John Claffy known as Dad. Claffy seeks 25000 and Thompson 100000 for alleged illegal arrest and unlawful detention without warrant or due process related to a murder case.
George L. Eads a dentist and his wife are under arrest charged with counterfeiting. Mrs Kade made small purchases in stores passing a counterfeit 85 gold piece. She says her husband made the money and forced her to pass it. Three counterfeit coins found, plus plaster molds in home and office. Amount passed unknown. Bade came from Cedar Rapids two years ago. his mother remains there.
Secretary Cortelyou reports that Newton M. Shaffer of New York joined the president's doctors in a morning consultation. An incision into the small knee cavity revealed slight bone involvement. Thorough drainage is established and recovery is expected without interruption. Surgery performed by Surgeon General Rixey with Dr Lang, in consultation with Drs O Reilly Shaffer Urie and Stitt.
In Anoka Minnesota on September 20 7-year-old Alice Ribeau fell through boards covering a steam condenser well and was fatally burned. Her 9-year-old sister attempted to rescue her and was likely fatally scorched. a man nearby was burned but expected to recover. Brigadier General Funston criticizes the abolition of the post canteen as harmful.

Geneva Lake Wisconsin September 20 witnesses report a long slender sea serpent seen from a cottage porch near shore.
