Waterloo resident Elster R. Lent, 30, narrowly escaped drowning when his truck veered into a gravel pit. Foreman John Smith, 42, of Dike, dived into the water, broke a window pane, and freed Lent from the submerged cab.

Iowa City reports Henry Reynolds a Sharon high school student and farm youth missing after a Monday night automobile overturn. After extrication the car was set upright and Reynolds left in a dazed condition. police later found the vehicle abandoned in the southern part of Iowa City. His parents are Mr and Mrs Iles Reynolds.
Council Bluffs announces a 1000000 program of improvements at the new Union Pacific railway mail terminal. The plan adds 1,899 feet of reinforced concrete runways and steel umbrella train sheds replacing wooden platforms at the recently completed building, to be dedicated at a Friday ceremony.
London dispatch reports Adolf Hitler inviting Britain France and Italy to a four power conference in Munich. Neville Chamberlain announced the invitation and said Hitler will withhold mobilization for 24 hours. Mussolini pressed for the talks as a last effort to avert war.

Word has it Helen Finney a student at S&S C has been chosen as a member of the Women’s glee club. The club has sixty four members and is directed by Rosalind Cook of the college music faculty. Finney is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Hervey Tinney and graduated in June from Washington junior college.
The 1938 Dutch Creek corn show program announces a two day event in Iowa with more than 250 entries and a 100 car display. Sweepstakes prize is 100 dollars plus over 400 dollars in hybrid seed corn prizes from multiple seed companies. Entries welcome before October 5 at noon with space reserved in advance. In Des Moines on September 28 4INS Iowa farmers anticipate AAA payments as part of the 1938 farm program. Dickinson county expects about 45000 dollars and O'Brien county about 95000 dollars to be paid this week. State AAA chairman C D Klein reports applications received from Clarke Buena Vista Audubon and others while Emmet Clay and Hargin farmers sign benefits applications.
