DES MOINES Sept 28 Governor Hammill said no martial law will be enforced immediately in Iowa strike areas near Centerville. He told United Press state action will wait, noting Appanoose county officials did not request troops after last night’s mine war flareup.
A Friday hearing before Judge Charles A. Dewey will decide if a 20 percent dividend can be paid to depositors of the closed Farmers and Merchants State Bank. The receiver seeks court authorization to distribute about $90,000 to Washington creditors, as part of a total on hand of $147,112.82 from liquidation and assessments. The city of Washington claims $91,258.83, with other small claims pending. if approved this would be the second 20 percent payout, totaling 40 percent to depositors since the receivership began.
Coach Hod Rice leads Washington High School teams now known as the Demons amid a drive by the Honor W club to boost athletic conditions. Ottumwa and other rivals, including Cedar Raundsite Tigers and Parsons Wildcats, loom as tough opponents while the Demons scrimmage and refine plays to strengthen the football and basketball squads.
The horseshoe pitchers tournament associated with the fall festival will be held on the vacant lot west of the Methodist church, same site as last year. Prizes of thirty dollars will be awarded daily. Andy Blattner oversees the horseshoe pitching department. Mr. and Mrs. R D Page travel to Sigourney to meet their son and family before continuing to Humboldt for a short visit.
John Ford aged 63 brother of Henry Ford was found dead from heart disease in a vacant Fordson house after presiding over a city council meeting. He had recently purchased the home for recreation and continued his private and civic duties despite medical warnings.
Noy L. Krueger a Keokuk graduate student at the State University of Iowa will take over Harland W. Mead’s duties at Washington junior college while Mead is hospitalized after appendicitis surgery. Krueger handles two chemistry and one mathematics recitation each forenoon and attends university recitations in the afternoon. Mrs. Mead may hear one of her husband’s classes after this week. Mead is expected to be off duty for several weeks. This marks the seventh Washington schools teacher to undergo appendicitis surgery in less than a year following Florence Cunningham, Louisa Young, H. B. Case, Maurine McLaughlin, Eleie Glaseburner, and Mildred Craig.
Des Moines reports indicate frost and cold spell did not significantly damage Iowa corn. Director Charles D. Reed says corn is 59 percent safe from frost with late corn progressing toward maturity and rains mostly hindering more than helping.
More than 100 white Emerson high students walk out for the third day in a row protesting admission of 24 black students. Officials say transfers are not possible due to crowded schools, and absences must be made up. The stalemate persists as parents reportedly back the strikers and no progress toward desegregation is seen.
Washington's second annual fall festival opens tomorrow morning with a nine o clock band concert in Central park. The parade led by the Washington hussar band will begin promptly at ten, with all units on hand. Cars and rides are being set up in the public square as carpenters work, and free acts start at eleven to move the day along.
Carson Packer of Crawfordsville a Washington junior college student was seriously injured in a car crash south of Ainsworth a week ago. He shows signs of waking from unconsciousness at the county hospital while his mother remains by his side and encouraged by the improvement.
The county baby clinic portion of the Fall Festival lists mothers and babies by name, address, baby name, and age with scheduled appearance times. Entries show roughly equal numbers of boys and girls from across the county, including many towns and routes with ages from infancy to around two years.
Financial report from the Crocker s Brigade and Tri County Veterans reunion held September 21 22 shows a credit balance. Mil an Shields chaired the finance committee and items include Journal printing 3.50 drayage 2.00 taxi 2.25 moving plane 1.50 total 86.25. balance to be held by the treasurer and turned over to next Memorial Day committee.
The September grand jury reported no indictment against Fred Ginkens of Brighton for larceny and no indictment against Russell Darnell for threatening to commit great bodily harm. Hugh Piper’s perjury bound case was dismissed by the county attorney.
A dense list of events fills the festival day from morning to night. Performances feature The Aerial Blacks The Flying Trapeze Thelma the Contortionist and The Washington Hussar Band with dances and concerts at Central Park West Side Square East Side Square and North Side Square. Judging includes poultry hogs draft horses and small grains while parades and prize presentations close the day. Col Macon and his dog show are previewed.
