Open house at the Ainsworth Elementary School in Highland district is set for October 3 at 7 p.m. The date was previously announced for another day and patrons are urged to attend on the new date.
The Commerce Department reports the leading economic indicators index jumped 2.2 percent in August, the largest monthly gain since March and the strongest quarterly rise since 1971. Eight indicators rose except plant and equipment orders, with unemployment claims improving as a favorable sign.
Des Moines IA UPI Gov. Robert D. Ray rebutted Democratic rival Paul Franzenburg’s charges on Iowa industrial growth noting the state added jobs and planned a 300 to 600 employee plant in Burlington. He blamed 1971 capital investments drop on national economic conditions and urged debate from under the Capitol dome.
In Paris Henry Kissinger met North Vietnamese negotiators Le Duc Tho and Xuan Thuy for a second day of private talks. Hanoi urged discussions on guarantees to prevent domination in a three-part Saigon government. U.S. and Vietnamese missions offered no comment on progress. Le Figaro noted Hanoi may keep doors open while Washington weighs options.
First degree murder charges were filed against Bruce Hazen 28 of South Sioux City Neb after a double stabbing in Sioux City left Janet Rabe 18 dead and Pam Gutz 22 critically wounded. Police say Rabe was sexually assaulted and found chained in a basement. Hazen was moved to Iowa for court hearings.

Washington High School Science Club students joined state archeologists to uncover soil around a historic Busby farm cabin. The effort yielded glass, pottery, a key and coins as teams split around the cabin, storm cellar, and privy with aim to date the structure and preserve heritage.
Marion Democrat Dick Clark urged enactment of federal no fault auto insurance standards. The US Senate candidate criticized incumbent Sen. Jack Miller of Iowa for voting August 8 to send the no fault bill back to committee during the current session.
