Senate Democratic Leader Mansfield warned the move could fail the effort to end the blockade as Fortas faced scrutiny over lecturing fees. Dirksen said he would vote against cloture, noting he would have opposed the nomination had he known of the $15,000 for nine lectures at American University last summer. The election night showdown looked increasingly likely as Mansfield pressed for a vote.
