Ordnance Steel Foundry Co in Bettendorf resumed work Tuesday afternoon as Local Union No. 144 United Farm Equipment and Metal Workers of America voted to return to war. The plant had been idle since Friday after 150 mutinous workers struck over a 15 cent hourly gap affecting 141 women in the department. John B. Watkins, district vice president, said a later meeting with company officials would address the unauthorized strike.
The Des Moines OPA said six Iowa meat sellers paid penalties for overcharging. Swanson's Food Market No. 1 Ottumwa paid 854 dollars, Estherville's Arnold Mouritsen 279, Henry Hackett Oskaloosa 224, Brady's Grocery Iowa City 1438, Kaus Locker Long Falls 196, J. Q. McConnell Bussey 75.
A district court hearing before Judge Norman R. Hays examined the Denver-Chicago Truck Co. charges over operating trucks in Iowa without proper registration. Clifford Menking and six other drivers were arrested for operating without Iowa licensing while the firm asserts Nebraska licenses grant reciprocal rights for crossing Iowa. The state motor vehicle chief Dale Shaw contends the Denver company, a Colorado corporation with Nebraska residence, must be licensed in Iowa.
A United Air Lines plane at 4000 feet near Des Moines collided with a flock of ducks. Some ducks were killed. the plane sustained dents and a broken windshield. The pilot was injured and hospitalized. passengers waited for a relief flight.
The state executive council on Tuesday authorized the state law library to contribute about 60000 pounds of materials to a wastepaper salvage campaign. The library will give 20000 bound volumes of old New York state government reports, roughly 50 years old and with no historic value to the Iowa library.
MOSCOW reports German troops withdrawing from Riga under heavy Russian bombing as three Soviet armies close in. Russians overrun towns around Riga and threaten to cut the land corridor to Lithuania and East Prussia. Farther south, Soviet forces push along the Slovak Polish frontier in preparation for a drive into Hungary. The German retreat appears to be a last-ditch effort to cover their withdrawal into Latvia and East Prussia.

George Haberman Sr and Mrs Haberman Solon visited to mark their wedding anniversary and to see their son George Jr who has arrived in France.
Fred E. Walton died last night after one o clock while living in West Chester. Funeral services are set for two o clock Thursday afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home with burial in West Chester cemetery. He was born December 18 1867 in Franklin township to J B Walton and Theodosia Clark Walton. He leaves seven brothers Arthur Clay Carl Jeptha Grover of West Chester John of Davenport James of Oskaloosa and three sisters Mrs Effie Clem en of Waterloo Mrs Ella Holloway of Fairfield and Mrs Harold Pauls of Muscatine.
China based Americas B 29 Super Fortresses attacked Anshan in Manchuria for the third time in daylight. Other B 29s raided Darwin Loyang and Kaifeng. Results at Anshan unavailable due to cloud cover but other raids reported good. No bombers were lost.
Fire crews responded to a kerosene stove blaze at 614 North Second Avenue the Simmering residence. The fire was controlled with limited damage and no injuries reported.
Mr and Mrs Roy W Randall received a War Department message that their son Staff Sergeant Thomas D Randall was seriously wounded in Belgium on September 9. His wife in Muscatine later received his letter dated September 12 describing the wound, and he said he expected to recover and he is in a hospital in England.
Washington county salvage chief Earle Libe urged more waste paper for September totals and reported brisk clothing donations for Russians. Residents were asked to place paper in salvage bins within three days and deliver clothing to the center near Congress Hotel. boxes are needed and contributors may leave garments loose for packing.
Allied briefing confirms remnants of British 1st Airborne withdrew from the Arnhem pocket leaving the north bank of the Nederrijn river and Arnhem under German control. The move followed two days of blackout and hindered by bad weather and failed relief efforts.
United Press reports Japan announced American troops landed on the eastern shore of Peleliu. Troops reportedly came ashore from vessels penetrating Garudoroko breakwater, with ships observed in the Kosusoru strait north of the Palau islands. A Tokyo broadcast said a large American task force was sighted north of Perelra and under surveillance.
