A 38 year old Iowa City man Edward Gerdes was arrested at a Cedar Rapids hotel and held in the Iowa City municipal jail. He is accused of converting about 409 dollars in tavern receipts for his own use from Mary's Tavern in Iowa City. Aug Maine fee hike on marriage licenses takes effect Oct 1.
AMES Iowa UPI fall enrollment at Iowa State University climbed 6 percent from last year, reaching 19,172 students. President W Robert Parks noted the surge surprised officials as it slightly beat prior projections despite a 60 percent tuition increase approved by the Regents.
In Chicago, about two thousand white construction workers attacked blacks trying to enter a federal hearing on job discrimination. Nine arrests and five injuries, including police, followed fights near the Customs Building and later near Picasso’s statue in the Loop.双方 across factions clashed, with shots fired but no gunfire injuries reported.

Students operate six machine types including a new IBM key punch with a four hour instruction tape and 15 days of class time. A $3000 programmable printing calculator and a bank like book keeping machine broaden the department’s range. Berdo says the program rivals college offerings in variety, draws 15 students per class, and eases later college study for two years of typing shorthand and a year of business machines.
State Senator Joseph Flatt rejects Iowa Democratic Chairman Clark Rasmussen’s demand that he resign due to questions about residency. Flatt asserts he remains a legal resident of Madison County and a qualified Senate member, despite listing an Ankeny home and living there part time. He criticizes Rasmussen and says he will not jeopardize his 11-year legislative tenure.
U.S. helicopter gunships opened fire on civilians and South Vietnamese soldiers, killing 14 and wounding seven as they fled. The pilots mistook fleeing locals for Viet Cong, with no shots fired at the Americans. This followed a second such incident in a week near Saigon. An investigation has begun.
