Fifteen hundred people gathered at the Rock Island train in Emmetsburg to bid farewell to 53 soldiers. In the confusion an authorized person from the UK reportedly gave the engineer a highball and the train left the station, with the conductor left behind. a farmer later drove the conductor to Rodman where he resumed charge.
The office of price administration set October new adult bicycle quotas at 88,000, down 2,000 from September, with a reserve of 26,400 for unforeseen demands. Iowa received a 1,238 quota with 371 in reserve, reflecting tightened allocations nationwide.
Mount Pleasant proprietor Glen Folker, 40, was killed when the plane given as his reward for buying an $18.75 defense bond stalled and plunged into a cornfield. Pilot Dr A E Ponder, 30, a Burlington veterinarian, was critically injured after taking off from the nearby airport as civilians had been giving rides to bond purchasers all afternoon.

Funeral services for Mrs. Harry Knerr 50 of Elmhurst Illinois will be at two tomorrow afternoon at the Church of Christ in Brighton Rev R W Fillmore to conduct with Hoskins funeral home in charge The body arrives in Brighton tonight and will be taken to the Hoskins home Mrs Knerr died at home Saturday She is survived by her husband and one son Herman Johnson and Mrs Johnson of Chicago were to accompany the body tonight She was reared in the home of her aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs John Leffler and lived there for years prior to moving to Elmhurst 25 years ago
Roy Farrier living on South Seventh avenue asked Sheriff H. M. Putnam to locate a woman alleged to have taken a black fur trimmed coat from his home this morning. The coat she wore is too large for her and she is described as 45 to 50 years old, about five foot five inches tall and weighing around 199 pounds. The state police radio at Fairfield was asked to broadcast a description of the suspect.
Mr and Mrs Arlo Cordell and son Howard of Moline NL and Mr and Mrs Harold Bieg with Charles Kephart were dinner guests yesterday in the Simmering home.
Governor George A. Wilson called a conservation commission meeting for October 6 to discuss Iowa deer. The commission had approved baiting and shooting to reduce numbers amid crop damage from about 500 wild deer, but Wilson opposed the plan saying there will be no deer baiting in Iowa as long as he is governor.
Adolf Hitler addressed 12,000 young German officers at the Berlin Sportpalast, expressing his absolute confidence in victory. Hermann Goering opened the meeting and noted the officers would soon return to the front as Hitler outlined Germany's historic fight for existence.

A purchaser offered to buy another $18.75 bond to raise sales, and boarded the plane.
