In Korea near the Manchurian border US Sabrejet F-86 interceptors from the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing shot down 61 MiGs, with five damaged and two enemy planes destroyed. The long air battle spanned from 25,000 feet to near ground level, marking a major late-war engagement.
The guide highlights Michie State against Oreton State at 7 PM tonight and Columbia versus Princeton at 9:45 AM Saturday. Boxing is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 PM. The listings are free.

Carolyn Hinshaw won first prize of 3 for selling the most VFW Buddy poppies on Washington streets Saturday. Barbara Hotle and Erma Kephat took second and third. All 16 helpers received theater tickets and will attend a VEW hall party next month.

Seven Washington county youths were among the draftees departing this morning toward Des Moines for induction into the armed forces. The travelers listed include John Samuel Minick, Kenneth Arthur Lorack, John Junior Wittrie, Donald Dale Kolosick, Marvin Dean Yetty, Clarence J. Brown, and John LeRoy Bixby, with hometowns Kalona Riverside Crawfordsville and Washington noted.
Duke McMikle wins an all expense paid trip to Chicago to attend the Bears versus Yankees game on October 14. He earned the trip by placing among the top five in a contest among 46 meat departments in an Oscar Mayer Wiener competition from Benner headquarters Burlington.
The Zank Walton League convention at St James social hall resumed regular meetings after summer. Reports by Harold Cress Harold Mangold Paul Horak K K Klopfenstein and Harold Brock. Dues rise to five dollars as national and state dues increase. Klopfenstein named Max Donaldson Ray Red linger and Harold Mangold to the nominating committee. A concession stand at Lake Darling was reported with thanks to helpers.
Washington area veterans are reminded that the department service officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in Mt Pleasant on the afternoon of Thursday September 27 to assist veterans and their dependents. Truman Hysell post commander of VEW post No 2208 in Washington urges veterans with problems to plan the trip for the free VEW Iowa service.
Twenty persons from throughout the county met in the speech correction class in the courthouse Monday evening. Professor Clay of Iowa Wesleyan College teaches for 15 weeks. The course awards three semester hours and aids in certificate renewal and placement for both handicapped children and adults.
George Weidlein, born September 25 1854 in Morristown Illinois, reflects on longevity while living in Wellman Iowa with his son Guy. Once a farmer who moved to Missouri and Iowa, he started a growing meat market in Wellman in 1920 at age 66, supported by his children, especially Guy.
Washington officials rallied support for Chamberlin Bros. Sport Shop in Davenport amid price chart filing charges by OPS. A hearing was set for Oct 15. the store was assured it would not be closed as the case remains civil. The Nets Clothing Store in Atlantic also faces similar action.
Fred Wiliam Diller of Inglewood California died September 14 after a long illness in a local hospital. He had lived in Washington previously and worked as a button cutter at the American Pearl Button company. He moved to California in 1938. Funeral services were held in Inglewood with burial in the local cemetery. survivors include his wife and daughter Eva.
London reports King George VI, fighting for life after surgery to remove part of a lung and ribs, had a comfortable day and was able to take nourishment. Physicians noted no official detail on the ailment but said danger remained and survival was uncertain for at least a week.
The Iowa military district invites Korean War veterans in Iowa to attend the University of Iowa Pittsburg football game in Iowa City on October 15. Dr. Paul W. Breehler, Iowa athletic director, extended the invitation to all service branches and veterans in various statuses. Veterans should contact the Iowa military district public information officer at Fort Des Moines.
Francis E. Beliel and Richard Crawford received 10 year terms in the Anamosa men's reformatory but the judge suspended the sentences after noting good behavior. They were paroled to the sheriff's custody. Appeal bonds were set at two thousand dollars.

Price enforcement agents descended on 500 slaughter houses nationwide in a government drive against black market beef operations. OPS expanded investigations to about 50 cities after finding price violations in eight of 14 cities visited. Officials cited complaints from slaughterers and packers about ceiling price evasion and alleged upbilling, falsified weights, and inflated yields to justify higher prices.

Funeral services for Cpl. Raymond B Chapman will be held at 2 p m Wednesday at Fairbanks Funeral Home in Muscatine with burial at Grandview Cemetery. He was born in Keota in December 1929 and killed in action in Korea on February 17, 1951. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Paul Chapman Letts and a former member of the Boy Scouts Grandview and the Civil Air Patrol unit in Muscatine.
