President Nixon says post-freeze measures may curb interest rates if borrowing costs rise, covering the entire economy and lasting until inflation is checked. He declined a set end date and said policy will depend on inflation progress and rate trends.
A county dog census lists 1,535 licensed dogs with mongrels making up about one third and purebreds like Collies Terriers and German Shepherds also represented. Notable individuals include Blackie a 19 year old Cocker Spaniel and lists of breeds with counts along with National Dog Week observations and a local AFS student welcome breakfast.

As autumn opens in Washington County farmers report potential record corn yields yet face a sharp price drop from 1.38 to 90 cents per bushel. Soybeans and grain sorghum join the harvest while dryers enable picking at higher moisture. County extension agent Jim Frier cautions yields may vary but expects better results than last year.
Public works director Jim Reschly says a slurry seal coat will start Monday on blacktop streets in the business area and around the square. Ritsehels Inc. of Peoria Illinois handles the work using 400 tons of aggregate near the city pool. Traffic may be restricted until the seal sets.
A 23 year old German political science student slapped Chancellor Willy Brandt on a Munich sidewalk as a protest against his east European policies. Police identified the attacker as Viktor Gislo a student who recently ran unsuccessfully for the Bavarian state parliament with the extreme right NDP party.
United Press International reports partly cloudy conditions with light rain possible southeast tonight and cooler lows 40 to 45 along with warmer lows reaching the lower 50s in the south. Saturday remains mostly cloudy with a chance of rain mainly east, and highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
Republican Congressman Richard E Poff of Virginia emerged as a leading contender for one of two Supreme Court vacancies. President Nixon hinted the other spot could go to the first woman justice, as Justice John M Harlan resigns ill with cancer and Justice Hugo L Black’s stroke worsens. ADA accuses Poff of civil rights opposition, citing his 1956 Southern Manifesto signatory record.
