Northwestern Bell Des Moines hires Negro workers after delay

Northwestern Bell rent a vacant Des Moines house in a Black neighborhood for an employment office. James Olson notes progress and persistent hiring barriers while recalling early metalwork of segregated toilets and facilities for Black elevator operators amid broader social reforms and urban integration.

Uncertain youth risks discharge before prior insight

A foreman prepared to fire an unsatisfactory worker when a concerned personnel man intervened. The youth, taught by his mother that asking questions is dumb, had no car and no public transport. He planned to hitchhike or walk about five miles to a 7 30 a.m. suburban job.

Experiment in fair employment by H G Weber

About 102 people are in or have finished a skill training program at an Iowa center. Northwestern Bell is hiring 51 others now and 112 more may qualify through training. Olson argues prejudice grows with distance and that shared work reduces fear, noting firmer attitudes in remote towns and praise for first-time hires of Black workers.
