In Vancouver Canada barbers raised children's haircuts from 50 to 75 cents. A spokesman cited mental anguish caused by youngsters climbing into barbershop chairs as the reason for the joke price hike.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles urged world disarmament efforts before the American Federation of Labor in St Louis. He warned that new weapons, including atom bombs, hydrogen bombs, and potential Soviet capabilities, threaten civilization and require firm arms control. He called for resilience, a hardening of resolve, and renewed U.N. talks to reduce tension and end wars. The U.S. Korea alliance remains united to counter aggression and pursue a Korea peace conference while prisoner repatriation proceeds toward about 3,600. He rejected concessions to rulers in Russia and allied states as a path to salvation.
Britain at the United Nations General Assembly called for face to face talks with the Koreans under American terms and left neutrals’ participation to the conference. Selwyn Lloyd pressed for flexibility and noted India’s exclusion from the Lugano ministers conference while Philippines seeks a Security Council seat with US backing Turkey.
Iowa Broadcasters Association urged Gov Beardsley and officials to remove WOI-TV from the commercial field arguing its schedule proves it is not educational. A crowd of about 500 farmers and implement dealers attended a John Deere farm implements demonstration at Washington airport Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event showcased John Deere tractors and plows, a Letts mill, and a 227 corn picker, sponsored by the Farmers Implement Company. Grace Hill Ladies Aid provided lunch.

In Des Moines a 16 year old Cedar Rapids youth driving a stolen car led a pursuit by five patrol cars. The incident began when he gas up and fled without paying in Cedar Rapids before being cornered in downtown Des Moines after his car rammed a patrol vehicle.
Two Ottumwa men were jailed after being picked up Wednesday night and presented to Mayor Richard Hudson of Brigh ton. George A. Albertson was fined 50 dollars or 15 days in jail for permitting an unauthorized person to drive his car. Cleo Van Buskirk received 30 days in jail for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
Humboldt Iowa claim by Clyde Herring Polk County Attorney at a Democratic dinner accuses lobbyists of paying state legislators handsome cash fees to write bills. Herring says cash payments conceal activities while James Schramm calls it a pre campaign speech amid GOP legislature attacks.
State Auditor faults Chickasaw County for irregularities in 1952 including construction contracts totaling 30 179 without voter approval. Budget not filed. funds not appropriated as required. Garages 19 524 approved after rejections. barn 14 655 built without vote. Road fund claims improperly approved.
A marriage license has been issued to Ivan Lynn Fry and Patricia Sue Nicola, both of Cedar Rapids, confirming their upcoming nuptials in the city.
Dr Marek Korowicz formerly with the Polish U N delegation testified before the House Un American Activities Committee that the Soviet goal is world conquest by 1970 or 1980. He described a planned peace offensive at the U N and said all Polish and satellite actions are directed by Moscow.
Twenty three American prisoners, including three Black men, rode into neutral custody in three Russian made trucks at Panmunjom. They chanted Communist slogans and pledged never to return to the United States while the present government endures. An American guard protested a pro Communist march as observers watched the scene unfold.
A staff meeting for public health nurses in Southeastern Iowa was held at the Washington County Health Unit on September 23. Thirty five school and county nurses attended with a program theme School Health. Madeline M Donnelly MDDirector Division of Maternal and Child Health State Department of Health spoke on Current Trends in School Health Services. Geraldine Buese RON Mental Health Nurse Consultant presented Emotionally Disturbed Child in the Classroom. Mattie Brass RN Director Division of Public Health Nursing and Elvira I Grabow RN Nurse Consultant Bureau of Dental Hygiene State University of Iowa gave updates on public health nursing and dental health topics.
Washington Kiwanis Club members will sell peanuts Saturday September 26 to fund youth projects. The drive honors Kiwanis National Kids Day and aims to involve the city. Past proceeds funded a YMCA television and a school football scoreboard at Casefield. No set price. buyers donate what they can.
David M. Lintner of 310 North Avenue D Washington explains he left farming in December 1937 and became a rug weaver after illness. He bought a two harness loom in January 1952 and notes rug making is time consuming and not highly profitable, with Mrs. Lintner assisting in planning and preparation.
Mr and Mrs Lintner specialize in rug making from discarded fabrics. They collect rag strips from customers nationwide and craft them into custom rugs in styles from hit or miss to striped patterns. Rugs are created from curtains blankets sheets stockings overalls dresses coats and more. One keepsake rug was made from old wool horse blankets.
In Canandaigua New York a jury convicts 19 year old Fred Eugene McManus of first degree murder for the killing of William A Braverman a Rochester N Y student after 14 hours of deliberation. The court will sentence McManus at 10 am EDT Saturday with potential life imprisonment or the death penalty if the judge rejects the jurys recommendation.
Pat Gorman of the AFL Amalgamated Meat Cutters warned at the national convention that a nationwide strike is imminent in the meat packing industry. He said a joint strike with the Clo Packinghouse Workers would target the Big Four firms Swift Armour Cudahy and Wilson, starting with Swift and likely spreading to others, affecting about 150 000 workers. He cited patient negotiations but said membership insisted on action against what he called an unacceptable proposition from the companies.
Artemas Brown was elected president of the Methodist Men's Brotherhood at Washington church. Dean Luers is vice president, Warren Dare secretary and treasurer as 41 men join as charter members. Membership will stay open 30 more days. An oyster stew preceded the meeting.
A 24 hour protest strike began across Italy with six million workers idle in 30 cities. Police, including jeep mounted riot units, stood by as Communist and non Communist unions press Premier Giuseppe Pella for higher wages and fewer layoffs amid stalled negotiations.
A pistol wielding bandit in brown coveralls robbed Security Bank and Trust Co in Marmaduke Arkansas of about $40,000. He forced manager C W Taylor to open the vault and locked him inside before escaping. Two customers freed Taylor after hearing a thumping sound by the vault. Police set roadblocks as officers investigate the bold morning theft.
Des Moines area forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with scattered showers tonight and cooler northwest. Friday remains partly cloudy and cooler with showers east, low 53 to 60 and highs 65 to 75, then fair and cooler Friday night. Saturday looks fair and mild.
