Highway Patrol Checks 16 592 Cars Statewide
State patrol inspected 16 592 vehicles at 35 checkpoints in a fall operation on Wednesday. Officers issued 297 summons for extremely unsafe vehicles 22 warning tickets for minor offenses and 2 340 tickets to repair equipment. Two drunken drivers were arrested at roadblocks. Patrol Chief David Merrick said the inspections aim to improve safety before winter.

Student Dance For Queens Big Success

Body of Baby Found in Apartment Attic Room
Keokuk authorities investigated the death of a baby girl believed to be two to three years old. A mummified body was found in the attic of an apartment house in a cigarette cart. Acting Coroner William Rankin said the infant was six to eight months old. Police found fairly new cut weeds and dry grass on a blanket wrapping the body.
