Washington County groups aid Kalona Festival efforts
The Washington County Historical Society will assist at the Kalona Festival Friday and Saturday with named volunteers. Northwestern Bell will mail 14 480.98 for the second half of 1971 operating property tax, raising the county total to 28 961.95 and Iowa statewide taxes to 12 183 640.88, up 43 percent from five years ago. A Tuesday September 26 meeting invites Each One Teach One volunteers. Izaak Walton League of Washington to host open house September 23 for Washington Hunting and Fishing Day, with a proclamation by Mayor Ralph Martin encouraging conservation.

Vandalism disrupted Washington state education sites from teachers’ homes to the high school and football field near Lincoln Elementary. The incident included littering, salt, loose turkeys, a slashed cat, upended equipment, and painted and burned marks referencing Mt. P and the Mt. Pleasant game. In separate news, a twin engine plane crashed into Lake Michigan killing a mother and three children. their killer husband later died by suicide after hospital release. Washington 102 year old celebrates long life
Mrs. Clara Rankin of Washington marks her 102nd birthday at the United Presbyterian Home. Born in 1870 in Henderson County Illinois she has six children and remains active knitting listening to tapes and watching TV. She never spent time in a hospital and attributes her longevity to a positive outlook and good family. The celebration included a rose and tree planted in her honor.

Freed pilots to avoid further use in Indochina war
Tokyo reported that an American delegation to Hanoi sent a telegram to President Nixon requesting that Navy Lt. Markham Hartley Air Force Maj. Edward Alias and Navy Lt. Farmers study grain drying on county tour
Thirty five Washington County farmers joined a Thursday tour of two local grain drying and handling facilities. ISU engineers Larry Van Fossen and Dale Hull explained methods to speed drying and reduce grain damage. They covered increasing air flow and higher temperatures for bin batch drying and using the bin as a circulating dryer, plus quality grain and adjuster steps such as slowing cylinder speed and spacing stripper plates.
