No Report Yet On Polio Serum Tests

Dr William Hammon of the University of Pittsburgh heads mass tests of gamma globulin for polio. He says results are not yet known and not opened. About 55 000 children in Texas Iowa Nebraska and Utah participated with early reports suggesting short term immunity, but preliminary Sun Times notes call findings unconfirmed.

Ministers Gather for Spiritual Life Retreat at Washington Club

About fifty Methodist ministers arrived this afternoon for a spiritual life retreat at the Washington Golf and Country Club. Group includes Dr Loren Thomas and Mr Pleasant Burlington district superintendent, Dr Alvin Maberry Ottumwa district superintendent. Speaker Dr James Uhlinger Davenport pastor. Meals provided at the club and ministers will stay overnight.

Two Cars Collide at Cemetery Entrance Collision Injures Three at Elm Grove Entrance

Washington reports a Sunday accident at the Elm Grove cemetery entrance when a northbound Jeep driven by Charles Miller was hit by Donald Helfrich. Miller suffered head and leg cuts, Mrs Helfrich had a broken tooth, and a Helfrich boy was cut on the head. All four left hospital after examination. City police investigated.

Six Youths Inducted into Armed Forces from Washington County

Six Washington county youths left by bus for induction into the armed forces in Des Moines. Plan Dedication of New Bible Version At Special Service

Ike pins Korean War on incompetent diplomats during Evansville stop

President hopeful Dwight D. Eisenhower accused incompetent diplomats of causing the Korean War while campaigning in Evansville on the way to Cincinnati. He blamed the Democrats for foreign policy failures, cited two major crises since 1945, and urged stronger military backing to prevent future crises.

VFW Buddy Poppy Day Planned With Local Support

Saturday September 27 marks VFW Buddy Poppy Day nationwide with the local post selling poppies in Washington. Mrs. Phil Kneen, poppy chairman, says Camp Fire Girls and VEW Auxiliary will aid in the sale to raise funds for veterans relief and welfare. One penny per poppy goes to the National Home. the rest funds local relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Three Days under Dead in Old Baldy Bunker

A U S sergeant and three others survived three days under fallen Americans on Old Baldy as Chinese troops swarmed the crest. They drank no water and ate nothing while American bombardment and grenades rained. Rescued by the 2nd Division early today they recalled gruesome close calls and battle chaos in the bunker amid blood and death.

County Legion Meet Postponed After District Conference

The Washington county American Legion meeting at Riverside on Tuesday September 23 is postponed. Commander Jerry Johnson says the delay is due to the district fall conference in West Point on that date. A new meeting date will be announced soon.

Two Slightly Hurt in Sunday Iowa Highway Accident

State patrolmen investigated a Sunday crash one mile west of Ainsworth Iowa. Alan Aringdale Centerville tried to back off the highway and was struck from the rear by Harry Miller Jamesport Missouri. The Aringdale car overturned into a ditch. both Miller occupants went to the hospital and were later discharged.

Mrs. Whiting Dies At Crawfordsville

Mrs Hollis Whiting 64 of Crawfordsville dies at home after illness begun last April. Funeral set for Wednesday at 2 pm in Federated church with Rev Earnest Smith, burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Jones funeral home handles arrangements. Survivors include husband nine children siblings and 11 grandchildren.

Committal Services Here Tuesday for David S Simon

Committal services for the ashes of David S Simon aged 90 who died in Los Angeles on June 4 1952 will be held at 1 50 oclock Tuesday afternoon at the graveside in Elm Grove cemetery. Friends will meet at Shermans Funeral Home to proceed to the cemetery for the service. Simon was the oldest member of a former Washington family and left a substantial bequest to the Washington YMCA. His grand-nephew Carl R Simon of Van Nuys California is the only survivor expected here for the service.

Stevenson calls Taft Hartley law a tire with 23 punctures

Governor Stevenson blasted the Taft Hartley Act as a tire with 23 punctures and five blowouts at the AFL convention in New York. He urged junking the law rather than a recap and proposed a five point program to strengthen the Department of Labor including a labor training service. He contrasted Eisenhower’s stance as vague on national emergency strikes and warned against union busting clauses.

Soil Conservation Delegates Attend Cedar Rapids Meeting

Three Washington county soil conservation district commissioners and their wives attended the sixth annual conference of soil conservation district commissioners in Cedar Rapids last week. Over 300 people were present with guest speakers including Gov. Beard who outlined Iowa's soil conservation responsibilities and progress. Riverett Mitchell of the National Farm and Home Hour discussed global soil conservation issues, while St H Bennett described the establishment and operation of soil conservation districts.
