Iowa officials order an investigation into rising fraudulent gasoline tax refund applications. State Treasurer W G C Bagley states the bureau of investigation will collect evidence on altered sales ledgers by farmers who did not file within the three month limit. Attorney General John M Rankin says charges will be filed.
Betty Siegner a 9 year old of Vail Iowa is receiving penicillin at a hospital for a serious infection that has lasted over three weeks. Doctors noted a limited civilian supply restricts the drug to about a third of the recommended amount and said other treatments are being used.
Des Moines OPA warns motorists to limit travel for away games this fall. District director R E Wat eis notes gasoline rationing will be enforced and that A book holders may burn 180 miles per trip while B and C holders have 120 miles monthly for pleasure driving.
Des Moines reports 17,320 cars with C stickers and 5,869 with B stickers in the 64 county OPA district. The A category lists 268,000 vehicles, with over 300,000 total including state and government cars not counted in A. All supplementary gasoline applications will be reviewed by 380 district staff starting September 27.
Four people were killed and several injured when a twin engine army bomber crashed into the roof of the main assembly plant of the Glenn L. Martin Nebraska Co in Omaha on September 22. The crash occurred shortly after noon and caused extensive damage to the facility drawing a large rescue response. Authorities began investigations into the incident and identification of victims.

Judge P J Siegers ordered 30 additional jurors drawn to the district court for the September term. Of 59 on the original list, 28 were excused, many farmers unavailable due to farm work. Jurors meet Monday at 1 30 for the Woll versus Groff damages case from an auto accident. Siegers plans to return to Washington Monday after hearings this week. About 40 members of the Leon Peatty post of the American Legion attended a potluck dinner last night. Sheriff H. M. Putnam spoke on the Runyon case at Fort Madison penitentiary. The next county Legion meeting is set for Brighton on Tuesday September 28 with officer elections. A letter of appreciation arrived from the Aurora Illinois post for the local post’s aid at Dr. W A Matson’s burial.
The body of Mrs. A. C. Miller who died in Long Beach California will arrive here Saturday. Funeral services are set for Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at Sherman's funeral home followed by burial in Elm Grove cemetery.

Knotek Bros. purebred Duroc gilt sold for 30000 in war bonds bid by C. R. McCutchhen and returned for reauction. Henry Berdo paid 7000 in bonds for John Stewart turkey. Receipts reached 25000 by 1 PM as country bidders joined in. Auctioneer Charles Brown started with a 25 pound gear grease sale for 700 in bonds and a jar of syrup for 200. The event drew a larger rural crowd and featured a high school band performance. A minute of silent prayer was observed for the armed services, followed by a prayer from Rev. George Kerr for the nation.
County war loan chair G B Mace reports Washington County subscriptions exceed 505 thousand dollars, with 355 732 from Washington town and 119 000 from townships. Towns aim to reach 284 163 quota soon as reports from Wellman Kalona Crawfordsville Ainsworth and Brighton boost totals. Some towns and townships have yet to report, delaying full county totals.
